FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) - Federal authorities say an Alabama man has been charged in a slaying at an Army post in southeast Georgia, but officials are releasing few details about the case. The FBI says 41-year-old Carl Evan Swain was arrested in his hometown of Jasper, Ala., on a warrant charging him with murder in a death at Fort Stewart near Savannah.
JEFFERSON, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say they've charged a 34-year-old man with murder and feticide in the killing of a pregnant 16-year-old girl in Jefferson. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Jonathan Michael Smith has been charged in the slaying of Cheyanne Hair.
ATLANTA (AP) - A lawyer for indicted state Sen. Don Balfour says the prosecution of his client is unconstitutional because it violates the separation of powers and violates the exclusive authority of the Senate to discipline its members. But a lawyer for the state says that interpretation would imply that state legislators are above the law. Trial is set to begin Dec. 16.
ATLANTA (AP) - A former Newton County sheriff's deputy has pleaded guilty to a federal firearms charge. The U.S. attorney's office in Atlanta says Darrell Mathis pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
