TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -

Former Russell County star Ray Castillo earned the first win of his collegiate career in Alabama's 8-3 season-opening victory over VMI on Friday.

Castillo entered the game with two outs in the fourth and Alabama trailing 3-0. He then proceeded to throw 3.1 innings of shutout ball, giving up just one hit, one walk and striking out five.

The Alabama bats woke up in the fifth, when Ryan Blanchard doubled home the Tide's first run. They would score two in the frame, and take the lead for good in the seventh when Mikey White made it 4-3 with an RBI single.

The series with VMI continues Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. CST.
