Downtown Opelika has big plans for the future

OPELIKA, Ala. -

Opelika's downtown area has grown tremendously in the last few years.

And they want the whole world to know what Opelika is about.

Shops and restaurants have really been supported by the people of Opelika.

Many people know about South Railroad, but Opelika Main Street tells me that the side streets around it are growing too.

The city and citizens are working hard to create an inviting atmosphere.

John Marsh is an entrepreneur who lives in Opelika and has invested a lot of money into the downtown area. He says there is potential for Opelika to be a destination for travelers.

"Opelika is a train town," Marsh said. "Most cities point away from the train tracks. We point to it and celebrate it. Our dream for downtown Opelika is that it would be a destination. We are on I-85 the most important corridor in the U.S. We want downtown Opelika to be world famous.

People there love the rustic look and feel of downtown Opelika. They embrace the trains that come through often.

In essence, they love their town, and they want to share it with the rest of the world

Mayor Bill Ham is in his fourth term as mayor of Auburn. When he walks the city sidewalks, family memories come flooding back. His father ran Bill Ham Cleaners on Magnolia Street for 35 years. Standing in front of the old storefront, Ham told me, "At the Georgia game I still had people that would say to me, 'Man, I was in school and your dad helped me do this or that.' He was there long enough to touch a lot of generations." Ham has a lot to brag about when it comes to Auburn. It ranks as th...
