Groundbreaking ceremony held for new Greenville student housing complex

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Community leaders in Greenville gathered to celebrate a $40 million investment in the Uptown District.

Breaking ground was the first step for a new student housing project just step from East Carolina University's campus.

The private investors plan to build a five-story housing complex featuring a massive parking deck, three courtyards and a swimming pool.

Many say this is a big step forward because of its economic development potential. "Policies have changed in this community and some of that has been driven by economic development but also by the private sector who is willing to step up and say you know what, if we hold hands together, we can do great things here in Greenville." Mayor Allen Thomas said.

In addition to the 500-person complex, there's room for retail and restaurants. Crews are expected to finish construction by Fall 2015.

A $40 million dollar investment could help to transform part of downtown Greenville.

And Tuesday morning, community leaders gathered on the city block between Evans and Cotanche streets to break ground on the Uptown Greenville Student Housing Project.

Just feet away from ECU's campus, private investors plan to build a five-story, $40-million student housing complex. It will have room for more than 500 people and feature a massive parking deck, three courtyards, and a swimming pool.

Also on tap, 11,000 square feet of space for restaurants and shops catered to students.

"The goal is to make Greenville one of the best college towns in the southeast and I think products like this kind of get there. This is also helping ECU provide great housing that's adjacent to campus, but it's provided by the private sector. And I think that is one of the ways in these economic times that the universities can really provide the best housing at the best cost to the students," said Mike McCarty, Project Manager.

Developers want to open it by 2015.
