City Mills Dam blast

PHENIX CITY, Ala. -

The City Mills Dam was blasted Tuesday morning in Phenix City.  The explosion is another step, making way for white water rafting.

Batson-Cook and the Scott Bridge Company were behind the explosion.  The City Mills Dam was built in 1907.  A 120 foot section of the dam, was blasted.

130 holes were drilled down into the depths of the bedrock, reaching up to 30-feet.  Batson-Cook, Project Director, Paul Meadows says everything went well, as planned.

"It was what we expected. It was very similar to what we did on the eagle and phenix and little bit different too in that this time we had the water coming over the dam so what that did is when water was coming over the dam a blast went off and water shot up over the air that you didn't see before so that was pretty impressive.">

The City Mills Dam was built back in 1907.  The 2.5 mile Chattahoochee whitewater rafting course is scheduled to open May 25.
