Opelika boasts state-of-the-art Sportsplex

Posted: Updated:
OPELIKA, Ala. -

The city of Opelika is known for success in high school sports, with the football Bulldogs finishing the year 6A state runners-up, and the basketball team advancing to regionals in the state tournament.

But the sports scene does not end there.

First of all, the city boasts one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country, Grand National, part of the prestigious Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

"This particular course held the ladies LPGA Tournament of Champions," said Grand National director of golf Scott Gomberg. "It held the Nike Tour Champion. It held the 2000 NCAA Men's Championship. It held the 2004 Ladies' Championship. We hold the high school state championships here every three to four years, which rotates around the trail."

The legend goes that Grand National was the single greatest site for a golf course ever seen by the great course designer Robert Trent Jones, Sr.

Golf isn't all Opelika has to offer, however. The Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatics Center is home to more than 6,000 members, and houses a state-of-the-art pool, fitness center, basketball courts, racquetball courts and more.

"We do a lot of community programs here," said aquatics director Mandy Johnson. "We still do the parks and recs out of this building, so all of the old park and rec events have moved over hereto this new facility, so we've done a huge impact in the community."

Also in the works is a full 18-hole disc golf course, and the Bulldogs' home football stadium is undergoing renovations as well.

Mayor Bill Ham is in his fourth term as mayor of Auburn. When he walks the city sidewalks, family memories come flooding back. His father ran Bill Ham Cleaners on Magnolia Street for 35 years. Standing in front of the old storefront, Ham told me, "At the Georgia game I still had people that would say to me, 'Man, I was in school and your dad helped me do this or that.' He was there long enough to touch a lot of generations." Ham has a lot to brag about when it comes to Auburn. It ranks as th...
