CSU Cheerleading wins Athletes of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Columbus State cheerleading team is well-known around the Peach Belt Conference for winning multiple conference titles.

Twelve, to be exact.

But the group recently picked up number 13 in front of their home crowd, and for that, they are our latest WRBL Athletes of the Week.

"It really means a lot to me because it really means a lot to our school," said junior Chelsie Horton. "Yes, we go to nationals, and that means a lot to us, but I think the conference championship means a whole lot more to our school because it was here."

The win was a welcome reward.

"It felt great to win," said team member Jason Riel. "Our team's been working really hard. We put in hours and hours and hours of dedicated time. We fall many times. We have to get back up and keep trying."

Head coach Jimbo Davis is in his nineteenth season, and says there's no secret to his success.

"Twenty of them are freshmen, and they just like going out there and showing off what they can do and having a good time," Davis said. "[This group is] probably one of the most fun groups I've had in a long time."

Under Davis's tutelage, the CSU dance team also captured the PBC title. Horton and Riel will compete in the doubles competition later this year.
