Columbus Mayor meets with policy makers about "Sunset" proposal

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson wants to "thaw out" the city's property tax freeze and make a more efficient tax system.  she's meeting with local policy makers to iron out the details. City councilors, school board members, and members of the development authority are coming together for the third policy maker meeting.

They'll determine whether the proposed sunset provision is a viable solution, ready to present to voters.  Mayor Tomlinson is hoping to gain support by clearing up any confusion about the how the measure will be implemented.

The "sunset"  would phase out the city's property tax assessment freeze.  Under the proposal, if you have the property tax freeze, you keep it.  But the freeze would not apply to new property owners...so frozen assessments would gradually disappear.

If the elected officials decide to move forward with the proposal, a series of public forums will be held for citizens.
