Alabama woman gets 20 years for cancer fraud scheme

Posted: Updated:

WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) - A central Alabama woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for collecting donations after lying about her son having cancer.

Stephanie Nicole Jones, of Titus, pleaded guilty to theft by deception and attempted theft by deception in October, and was sentenced Thursday morning in Elmore County Circuit Court. She was sentenced to 10 years for each count and the Montgomery Advertiser reports (http://on.mgmadv.com/14H88tg) the sentences will run consecutively.

District Attorney's officials have said Jones told others her then 5-year-old son had cancer and several people and organizations in Elmore County held fundraisers to pay for the boy's treatment. Authorities say the efforts raised more than $7,500 and Jones used some of it for a trip to Disney World.
