GBI investigates Manchester police shooting - WRBL

Coroner: Man shot in Manchester police shooting from Columbus

MANCHESTER, Ga. -

Meriwether County Coroner Johnny Worley says he has been unable to locate the family of a 25 year old man killed Friday morning during a shootout with police. Worley did confirm the man was from Columbus.

GBI agents are investigating the police shooting that happened in Manchester.

Manchester police were responding to a call about a stolen license plate on Nebula Road around 11 a.m. Friday. GBI Special Agent in Charge of the case Wayne Smith says when the officers arrived at the home, a man came from the woods running and shooting at them. The officers fired back, killing him next to a barn.

The GBI then took over the scene to conduct a use of force investigation. Smith says, "This is typical in cases like this where the police department itself does not want to conduct the investigation themselves so there's no conflict of interest."

Smith adds that the agents think there's more involved than license plates. "We're just speculating that maybe it's not totally about a stolen tag," he says. "It could be about some other things, and there are a number of alternate theories about that, we just don't know, but there are other possibilities."

Because the shooting happened outside, agents are using a machine called a Leica to scan images of the crime scene and use them in the investigation. Smith says, "That machine will actually record it in 3 dimensions, and we can later on look at it from different perspectives. We can look behind objects. For instance, if we learn that there's a bullet hole that we may not have seen, we can actually go back with this and look for that bullet hole in a building or something."

Investigators did find a bullet hole in a neighbor's roof. The name of the victim will be released pending notification of next of kin. His body will be sent to Atlanta for an autopsy.
