Deer season could get shorter

ATLANTA, Ga. -

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is considering shortening deer hunting season to respond to a decline in the state's deer population.

The DNR has learned longer deer hunting seasons have led to a significant drop in the deer population within the past decade. Officials say the deer population has dropped from about 1.4 million to less than 1 million.

John Bowers, the department's assistant chief of game management, says the department's goal is to stabilize the deer population around 1 million.

Among other regulations, the department is expected to vote in May on whether to shorten deer hunting season by 25 days.
