Trial begins over baby food lead warning

Posted: Updated:
SAN FRANCISCO -

A food safety scientist has testified that average lead levels in baby food products fall below the threshold for warning labels under California standards.

Scientist Barbara Petersen was the first witness on Monday in the civil trial that will help determine if the products must carry warning labels in California.

The lawsuit filed by the Environmental Law Foundation asserts that Gerber, Del Monte, Beech-Nut and many makers of baby foods are selling products containing lead at levels that require warning labels under Proposition 65.

The plaintiffs say Petersen's analysis is misleading because it averages lead levels in the entirety of the companies' products - rather than looking at each individually.
