Muscogee County school board chairperson defends board's actions

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Once again the Muscogee County School board seems to be at the center of controversy. However, board chairperson, Rob Varner, is confident the board is doing a good job.

During Monday night's work session board member Cathy Williams laid it all on the table and demanded answers. She told board members she had a hard time getting access to legal documents, wondering if there had been a policy change.

This incident is just one of a string of recent board troubles that has put the group in a seemingly negative light.

"Those on the sidelines and those looking may think it is conflict, its really not, its just trying to understand the issues," said Varner.

He added that he feels every board member is passionate about education in Muscogee County, and when passion collides it can often cause tension.

"Tension is a healthy aspect of a group of individuals that are asked to deliberate, especially when we are dealing with public money," explained Varner, adding that as long as the discussion is respectful and productive he sees it as a positive, not a negative.

"If you came to a meeting and we all sat there stone faced, we would not be a board doing our job, because we must ask questions."

Varner also said that he often finds that when the public does not know the answer to a problem, they fill in the blanks themselves, usually assuming the worst.

"We're easy targets for those on the sidelines to take shots at. I invite them to join the field of play whenever they want to, it's different when you are on the field," said Varner.

Open forums are planned to allow the public a chance to have more open discussion with the board. Varner said he feels the forums are necessary to clear up any misconceptions.

The first forum is scheduled for May 7th at 6 pm. The location is yet to be determined.
