Georgia teen drowns in reservoir

Posted: Updated:

CANTON, Ga. (AP) - Authorities have identified a teen who drowned in a north Georgia reservoir.

Officials say 17-year-old Jon Bettis, of Cherokee County, drowned in the Hickory Log Reservoir in Canton Wednesday. The teen's friend told authorities they had been swimming when Bettis began struggling and eventually went under.

County Fire Department spokesman Cavender says the reservoir was opened to the public on March 22 for fishing, but swimming is not allowed.

Cavender says Bettis was found about 30 feet from the reservoir's shore in between 10 and 20 feet of water. Cavender says the water's temperature was about 55 degrees.

Canton is about 45 miles north of downtown Atlanta.
