Columbus Police: Downtown patrols are heightened during summer months

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Spring is officially here and summer is just around the corner. More and more people are spending time outdoors, and that means more traffic in Uptown Columbus and along the Riverwalk; but is it safe?

Statistics show crime typically increases during the summer months and Major Julius Graham with the Columbus Police Department said the Fountain City is no exception.

"It's just a yearly event, and of course we do patrol 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, however, certain times and during certain events we do increase security," said Major Graham.

But he was quick to add that his department is prepared to make sure citizens feel secure while enjoying Uptown Columbus and the Riverwalk.

"By large the Riverwalk is safe and we do encourage our citizens to use it and our officers are directed to patrol and of course be aware of any incidents and be aware of anything that might pose a threat to the users of the riverwalk," said Major Graham.

The CPD also encourages everyone, no matter where they are to be safety conscious and be aware of their surroundings.

"We encourage them to use it during daylight hours and time when police presences is more prominent," added Major Graham.

He also said that if anyone sees anything they feel is out of the ordinary they can always flag down an officer. Both car and bike patrols are assigned to Uptown and the Riverwalk.

The police department said that so far this season no major incidents have been reported from either the Riverwalk or Uptown.
