Columbus Government Center evacuated because of water main break

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Around 7 AM the Columbus Government Center was evacuated due to a water main break.

About 1,000 people were ushered out of the building after fire alarms went off. Streets surrounding the building were blocked off while officials investigated.

Mayor Teresa Tomlinson said maintenance work is being conducted on the water pipes at the building and the break happened in a mechanical room in the basement level of the Government Center.

The water level dropped to a dangerous level causing the fire alarm to go off. She said that happens as a warning that there isn't enough water to put out a potential fire.

There was no fire at the building today, but standard practice is to evacuate the entire building when an alarm sounds.

People were allowed back inside the building around 9 AM and crews are in the process of repairing the break.

Even though it was an unfortunate situation, Mayor Tomlinson called the evacuation good practice to review and assess safety procedures.
