Thirteen-run first inning propels Columbus to win

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Columbus High Blue Devils used a first inning for the ages to easily knock off Shaw, 15-3, Thursday afternoon in five innings.

After Nick Poskey led off the game with a double, Al Jones, Jr. reached on a bunt single. A squeeze bunt from Hunter Swilling scored Poskey, and Swilling reached, leaving two on for Tony Dalponte, who hammered the first pitch he saw out to left to give the Blue Devils a 4-0 lead.

The Blue Devils were just getting started, though. Columbus batted around, and Dalponte batted again in the first, this time with the bases loaded. Again, on the first pitch he saw, he sent one out to deep center for a grand slam, his second home run of the inning.

Columbus would go on to send 19 men to the plate in the top of the first and score 13 runs. They would add two more, including one on an RBI triple by Dalponte, to reach the final.

Will Bice got the win, striking out three in four innings of work. Dalponte finished with three hits, eight RBI, 10 total bases and two runs scored.

The Blue Devils travel to Alexander tomorrow, while Shaw will travel to Fayette County.

    An Amber Alert has been canceled after 2-year old Maliah Harris was found safe in Georgia. Her 7-month-old sibling, Alyssa, was found dead and Maliah disappeared from a Mississippi home which prompted authorities to issue the alert. The girls parents, Donald Boyd Harris,34, and Allison Studdard, 31, are now in custody.
