COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Two Columbus High athletic standouts signed college national letters of intent Monday morning.

Wide receiver Tony Alexander signed to play with Maryville College in Tennessee, the defending NCAA Division III national champions. He said their academics played a large part in his decision.

"They got 100 percent acceptance in medical school, and the academics are great," Alexander said. "They just won a championship last year."

A centerfielder on the Blue Devil baseball team, AD Young will continue his career at junior college powerhouse Western Oklahoma State, a school known for its connection to professional baseball.

"They have a good program and they've had a lot of people go in the draft from there," Young said. "They have some good coaches out there."

Also on Monday, Young and the Blue Devils won a key region game on the road, 5-2 over Alexander.
