Malzahn pleased as spring ends

AUBURN, Ala. -

The Auburn Tigers wrapped up spring practice 2013 with an early morning workout on Wednesday.

Gus Malzahn had his team in shorts and t-shirts and spent most of the time teaching, saying he wanted players to know what to work on when they practiced on their own so they didn't develop bad habits.

For the most part, the first-year head coach seemed pleased with the overall result of spring.

"X's and O's, and the schemes, that'll come with time, but the attitude, I really feel like this team got closer," Malzahn said. "We talked about hard-nosed, physical edge, and we put them through it. They survived it, and I feel like they got better in that area."

Malzahn said the coaches would spend the next couple days evaluating the spring and helping the depth chart take shape before hitting the road recruiting. With the depth chart taking shape, that means a starting quarterback is closer than ever. After the final practice, Malzahn came the closest yet to revealing a timeline for naming who will take the first snap at Jordan-Hare in the fall.

"The quarterback position, you want to name a guy sooner rather than later," he said. "I believe Chris Todd two weeks into camp, Cam [Newton] was a little bit quicker, so it's all specialized as far as the situation."
