Columbus boys, girls golf wins Athletes of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Columbus boys and girls golf teams captured the 5-AAAA region titles on April 23, and for that, they are the latest WRBL Co-Athletes of the Week.

For the boys, this is their ninth straight region title and 12th out of the last 13. This year, they were led by Charlie Flowers, who shot a two-under 70 at Bull Creek to win medalist.

"Personally, I wanted to break 70," Flowers said. "Unfortunately, I didn't break 70, I shot 70, but I did win medalist, so I was happy."

Head coach Chris Parker likes the way his team is playing heading into the state tournament.

"We've been around 300, so that's a great score for a high school, so we're looking forward and we like our chances," Parker said. "We know we're going to work hard to make a good showing at the state tournament."

As impressive as the boys' streak of nine straight region titles is, the girls' team has almost doubled them up with 17 in a row.

"I think we were definitely thinking about each other and hoping each other would do well," said team leader Brett Beavers. "We're kind of competitive, but we're also really good friends so we wish each other the best."

If you listen to head coach Chris Spraggins, the chances of making it 18 in a row next year are pretty good.

"The future looks pretty good," Spraggins said. "We only have one senior out of eight girls. She'll graduate. She's our number four player, so we'll have our top three back plus the rest of the girls coming back. We have three freshmen."
