National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Saturday - WRBL

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Saturday

Posted: Updated:

If you want to get rid of expired unwanted prescription drugs in your cabinets you can bring them to a local collection site this Saturday no questions asked. Drug Enforcement Administration together with the local law enforcement agencies hosts its sixth National Drug Take-Back Day April 27th.

During the previous events this anonymous and free service helped collect more than 1,000 tons (over 2 million pounds) of prescription medications in the last three years since it started.

According to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health, more people abuse prescription drugs than cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin combined, DEA officials said.

They hope the take-back day will help bring those numbers down.

"We know that young people consider controlled-substance prescription drugs, like Vicodin, to be a safer way to get high, but they couldn't be more wrong," said DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart. "By removing unwanted prescription drugs from their homes, the public helps prevent experimentation, addiction, overdose and even death."
