Elon says Chick-fil-A can stay on campus

BURLINGTON, N.C. -

Elon University says Chick-fil-A can stay on campus.

The Times-News of Burlington reported (http://bit.ly/17mPtSg) the school's board of trustees made the decision, which was announced in an email to students, faculty and staff Thursday.

The student government association had voted to have Chick-fil-A removed after the company's chief operating officer, Dan Cathy, made statements supporting traditional family marriage and spoke against same-sex marriage.

The email said the school decided to keep Chick-fil-A because its contract is with a company called Aramark and not Chick-fil-A. The board also said it was reluctant to put the school in a position of making value judgments about legal activities by its vendors.

The school also said removing the restaurant would violate its mission statement, which encourages freedom of thought.
