Humane Society of Harris County opens new building

Posted: Updated:
HAMILTON, Ga. -

The Humane Society of Harris County officially opened Phase 1 of the HSHC Animal Shelter and Education Center Sunday.

The previous building was destroyed in a tornado in 2011. The new facility is situated on 4.4 acres donated under a lease agreement with the Harris County Commissioners, is 2,160 sq. feet and includes animal housing for dogs and cats.

This facility is the first and only private, no kill animal adoption and education center in the county. It will house approximately 22 to 24 dogs and 18 cats and its proximity to the new Harris County Municipal Animal Shelter will only improve an already excellent working relationship between the two agencies.

A walking trail, constructed by Eagle Scout Thomas Johnson of Pine Mountain with help from officers and soldiers from the 315th Cavalry Battalion at Ft. Benning was also named and dedicated.

The HSHC is located at 3938 Barnes Mill Road, Hamilton, Ga.
