U.S. Supreme Court refuses to reinstate Alabama immigration law

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Supreme Court is refusing to reinstate parts of Alabama's immigration law -- including a section that made it a crime to harbor people who are living in the country illegally. The justices today left in place a federal appeals court ruling that blocked parts of the law. The law's stated purpose was to reduce the "number of illegal aliens" in Alabama. The appeals court found that immigration law primarily is the responsibility of the federal government and that the state lacked the authority to enforce the provisions that had been challenged.
