Houston County schools may drop armed guards

Posted: Updated:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - One Alabama school system may be phasing out armed guards that were hired in the wake of last December's school shootings in Connecticut.

Houston County School Superintendent Tim Pitchford tells The Dothan Eagle (http://bit.ly/ZmFAyH ) that new security measures will reduce the need for the armed guards. In the last few months, the school system has installed automated locks allowing principals to lock down schools, more security cameras and implemented other security measures to make schools safer.

Pitchford says he would like to keep the guards, but it may be an unsustainable expense. Providing armed guards from February until the end of the school year cost the system about $81,000.
