COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Burglary and Theft Division of the Columbus Police Department is now on-line. The unit has created a Facebook page, geared towards catching criminals.

"This is a new endeavor for us. I believe that it is going to be very successful. I believe that it is going to help us, basically gain more exposure to a larger part of the community, which we have not been able to engage too well," said Sergeant Joe Weatherford, the head CPD's Burglary and Theft Department.

He said a detective in the unit came up with the idea.

"This is a proactive measure that we are looking to take. We primarily react. When a crime occurs we investigate, that's what we do. However it would be nice to go on and set up something that is a little more pro-active in retrieving information," said Sergeant Weatherford.

Sergeant Weatherford explained that as cases come into the department, suspect photos, surveillance video and tips will be posted on the page.

"I'd like to see this expanded. I'd like to see it expanded to statewide, area wide, to include Russell County, and we have one joint website, and we can have everything on there," added Sergeant Weatherford.

The page has only been active since Wednesday, but has already received more than 300 "likes."
