RALEIGH, N.C. -

A cyclist whose family started a major Raleigh construction firm was hit by a car on Lassiter Mill Road Thursday evening and died en route to the hospital. The driver is now facing charges.

Raleigh police say that Christopher Mangum, 58, of Raleigh, was hit while riding his bike south on Lassiter Mill Road. The driver of the vehicle, Thomas Castelloe, 81, of Raleigh, was attempting to make a left onto Marlowe Road but did not properly yield and struck Mangum. Castelloe lives in the neighborhood, which is not far from North Hills.

Multiple police cars were at the scene Thursday night and Lassiter Mill Road was closed to traffic part of the evening.

Mangum died and Castelloe has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield the right of way.

A memorial service for Mangum will be Monday at noon at the Raleigh First Assembly of God at 3249 Blue Ridge Road. A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home at 831 Wake Forest Road.

Mangum's family started the C.C. Mangum construction firm in 1927, a company that became one of the state's largest road contractors. The firm was later bought by Fred Smith, and Mangum started C.C. Mangum Consulting LLC.

Mangum was a former vice president of C.C. Mangum construction.

Mangum had deep roots to Raleigh, and the C.C. Mangum company often sponsored little league teams in the city. Mangum graduated from Sanderson High School in 1972 and N.C. State with a degree in civil engineering, according to his Linked In profile.

He also had multiple pictures of himself cycling on his Facebook profile. In one, he has a picture of himself in a triathlon in 2010.

A memorial service for Mangum will be held Monday at noon at the Raleigh First Assembly of God at 3249 Blue Ridge Road.
