12-year-old girl arrested for Brandon pepper spray incident

BRANDON FL (WFLA) -

Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy took a 12-year-old girl into custody Friday evening after they say she set off pepper spray inside McLane Middle School in Brandon.

"it's more than likely some type of attack repellant … like an OC spray, which would be a pepper spray or a mace type spray." said Maj. Clyde Eisenberg of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Students say people felt the effects of it just before 3:00 p.m. Friday.

"Their eyes started burning and their nose started burning and everybody just started to run out of the 200 building to get away," said Solanch Echevarria, an 8th grader at McLane.

Altogether the spray affected 93 students and 3 teachers. A spokeswoman for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue said paramedics took 17 people to the hospital by ambulance; 20 more rode on a Hillsborough County School bus to Brandon Regional.

"{Injuries} were very very minor," said Jessica Damico, spokesperson for fire rescue. "They had some irritation to their eyes and throat. Some who had difficulty breathing had a history of asthma."

By Friday evening all of the patients taken to the hospital were treated and released.

"Kids should be able to go to school and not worry about that stuff," said Suzette Spitzer, a mother who was picking up her partner's son at the school Friday. "When I went to school that is not something you thought about or worried about."

The ordeal delayed dismissal for the student body of more than 900 students by about 40 minutes.

Principal Franklin Oliver knows, after Sandy Hook, he and his students are living in a different time.

"Absolutely, I think it's a reflection of society … things that go on...kids don't take things as serious as they should and things like this happen." Oliver said. "The buses were going to be late, everybody's going to be out here, we have helicopters flying across the school. I'm sure they didn't expect that."

The 12 year-old girl is now facing one charge: disruption of a school function. That's a misdemeanor. Deputies took her to the Hillsborough County Juvenile Assessment Center where they will release her to her parents.
