Northside drops extra-inning heartbreaker to Whitewater

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The Northside Patriots fell to the Whitewater Wildcats, 4-1 in nine innings, in Monday's decisive game three of their GHSA AAAAA first-round playoff series.

The game was scheduled for Saturday, but moved to Monday due to rain.

Neither team got much going offensively early. Northside took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Chad Pigg drove home Rob Shayne to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

That's where the game stayed until the top of the seventh, when Evan Mask grounded out to second with a man on third, scoring Tyler Burdette with the game-tying run.

Northside had a chance in the bottom of the eighth. A leadoff walk, sacrifice bunt, intentional walk and base hit loaded the bases with one out, but Handley Boyd grounded into a 4-2-3 double play to end the inning.

Whitewater took advantage in the ninth. With the bases loaded, Whitewater notched back-to-back singles to make it 3-1. They would add one more in the frame to make it 4-1.

Northside would bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but a fielder's choice to the third baseman ended the threat. Whitewater advances to play Lakeside-Evans in the second round.
