Raleigh, Asheville battle for Beer City title

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Two North Carolina cities – Raleigh and Asheville - are competing for title of BeerCity USA, according to the website examiner.com.

Asheville has won the voting twice, in 2010 and 2011, and shared the title with Portland in 2009 and with Grand Rapids, Mich., in 2012.

The BeerCity USA poll is open until Friday at 11:59 p.m. Last year's poll saw nearly 56,000 votes last.

The Examiner said the poll is not intended to measure beer quality or number of breweries, but rather "local support of the final sum which is the enthusiasm for beer choice, diversity, flavor and accessibility. Most importantly it highlights beer as the meeting place."

Asheville has long been a leader in the craft beer scene, but Raleigh has made rapid growth in that niche in recent years, with places like the Boylan Bridge Brewpub, Big Boss Brewing Company and Lonerider thriving.
