Parents voice concerns over the Muscogee County school district

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The cafeteria of Downtown Elementary Magnet in Columbus was packed Tuesday night, as the Muscogee County school board hosted its first Community VOICE Forum.

The forum was the first of it's kind a number of years. School board chairperson Rob Varner said the board has a responsibility to promote dialogue and transparency, and this seemed like the perfect way to do so.

As parents took to the mic it was clear that one topic was at the forefront of most people's minds, the district's budget. Several parents voiced opposition against the proposed cost reduction options that were presented at Monday nights board meeting.

After each comment from the public, either board members or administrators had the chance to respond. Most also made plans to follow up with the citizen's concern.

After the meeting Varner said he was pleased with the large turnout as well as the level of communication. Another forum is planned for the fall, as well as next winter.
