Water levels around Watauga Lake are at the highest they've been in the lake's history.

According to the Tennessee Valley Authority's website, as of 4:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, Watauga Lake was 1,966.47 feet. That's up about 1.4 inches from Tuesday night's readings. 


The lakes current levels are beating the previous record of 1963.3 feet set in April of 1987. 

 

The Shook Branch swimming area and Rat Branch boat launch saw significant flooding with picnic tables, signs and walkways covered by rising water.

The Bayview Campground in Butler, Tennessee has seen the water push almost to the edge of the highway.

Bayview resident, Hilery Wallace, was concerned water would be inside his camper if waters continued to rise but planned on staying put despite more rain in the forecast.

"I'm hoping it's not going to get to my place but it'll be close and if it does it does", said Wallace.

The Tennessee Valley Authority says it will continue to release water downstream to prevent any further flooding.
