North Johnston softball a tightly knit team

KENLY, N.C. -

Most of the players on the North Johnston softball team have been playing together since tee ball. That familiarity is helping the Panthers reach new heights.

North Johnston is 21-0 on the season and have only trailed once in a game the entire season.

"Our infield has played together for two, three years," said head coach George Daniels. "They know each other and where the ball is coming from."

"We've always been strong, but all around, one through nine this is the strongest team I've been on," said senior left fielder Ashleigh Mason.

But the winning streak means nothing for the players if they don't finish off what they started. The Panthers are seeking their first state title.

"We've come close. We've finished second twice, in '05 and '09 and been to the finals five times total," Daniel said.

Daniel has a rapid fire defensive drill he calls "Chaos" that is designed to sharpen the Panthers fielding skills.

"Nobody else is going to hit the ball as hard as he hits it in the game," said Carolina Turner, a senior second basemen. "If we can stop the balls he's hitting at us, we're pretty confident we can stop just about every ball."
