TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

BP employee Fadi Alyasin remembers the frantic, screaming man, identified as James Minyard, who came to the station pleading with him to call 911.

"When we called the 911, they ask us what happened to him," said Alyasin.  "So they have to know.  We asked him what happened, he said he was playing with firecracks [sp] or some things, and blowing his hand."

Tampa Police say it was no firecracker that injured Minyard.  They say it was a homemade bomb.  The blast ripped the tip off Minyard's middle and ring fingers.  Police also found an unexploded device nearby on Sligh Avenue.

Tampa Police investigators say they spent 16 hours going through Minyard's house on East Crawford Street.  They say in the back, they found a small workshop where bombs were constructed.  Inside, there were four more explosives, as well as chemicals.

Police say Minyard admits he built the devices just to prove he can, using the Internet as a guide.

"There was no set plan.  He was going to explode them [the explosives] and more for recreation around the house, according to his statement," said Tampa Police Sergeant Bill Todd.

Investigators don't believe Minyard intended to hurt anyone, but his actions did put people at risk.

"The types of homemade explosives that he was making are very, very dangerous, and very volatile," said Tampa Police bomb squad Sergeant Jarrett Seal.

Police don't know exactly how Minyard blew off his fingers.  He faces six counts of manufacturing and possessing homemade explosive devices.
