SAVANNAH, Ga. -

Kristen Carr, Casey Googe and Kori Waugh combined for seven hits and eight RBIs and Mollie Russell tossed a complete game to lift the 16th-ranked Columbus State softball team to an 8-2 victory over Mount Olive in the first game of the NCAA Southeast Regional #1.

The contest was played at the Armstrong Softball Field in Savannah, GA.

With the victory, CSU (40-16) will take on top-seeded and fourth-ranked Armstrong tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. Mount Olive (34-14) will take on Wingate in an elimination contest tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The Lady Cougars nearly struck in the first inning loading the bases but were unable to come away with a run. They did however push two across in the second when Kori Waugh hit a two-out double down the leftfield wall plating Nina Rubio and Morgan Knight. Both runners picked up two-out walks setting the table for Waugh.

Both sides traded one-run innings in the fourth and fifth as the Trojans got their first hit and run of the game on a Beth Overman solo homerun in the fourth. Their second run came on a RBI groundout by Erin Brogan which scored Savannah Becker.

CSU kept their two run advantage after five as Waugh and Carr each hit a solo homerun in the fourth and fifth inning, respectively to make it a 4-2 ballgame.

Columbus State put the game away in the sixth which began with a Nina Rubio one out single to right-centerfield. Pinch-hitter Suzanne Carney and Waugh each walked loading the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Googe smacked a 3-2 pitch into the right-centerfield gap for a bases clearing double. Carr followed that up with a single down the rightfield line closing out the scoring in the game.

Russell tossed her 27th complete game of the year as she improved to 23-8. The right-hander gave up two runs (one earned) on just two hits. She struck out four while walking one.

Waugh was a perfect 2-for-2 which included her team leading 19th homerun of the year. She walked once and was hit by a pitch and also had three RBIs and two runs scored. Googe was 2-for-4 driving in three and scoring once. Carr went 3-for-4 including her 11th homerun of the season. The sophomore knocked in two and crossed the plate once.

Mount Olive starter Carly White dropped to 13-5 on the year as she lasted just 1.1 innings surrendering two runs on three walks and a hit. Lauren Smith tossed the next 4.1 innings allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks.

Overman and Katie Moore were each 1-for-3 picking up the only two hits for the Trojans. Overman's hit was her ninth homerun of the season.
