Russell County, Spanish Fort swap shutouts

SPANISH FORT, Ala. -

The Russell County Warriors split a doubleheader with Spanish Fort in Friday's semifinals of the AHSAA 5A baseball playoffs.

Russell County won game one, 5-0, thanks to the pitching of Jesse Nelson and one big inning.

Scoreless through five innings, the Warriors changed that in the sixth when Trevor Davis, Nelson and Anfernee Grier hit three home runs in four batters to make it 4-0.

They would add one more in the fifth to make it 5-0.

Game two did not go so well. This was also scoreless until the fifth, when Warrior starter Todd Dial ran into some trouble. With the bases loaded and two out, a borderline ball/strike call went against Dial, forcing in a run. The next batter was Rob Perteet, and he left the yard for a grand slam to break things open and make it 5-0.

Russell County could never answer and ultimately fell, 8-0.

The decisive game three is Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET. The winner will face the Hartselle/Pinson Valley winner in the state championship series.
