ATV collides with bike in Winter Haven, 1 dead and 3 injured

WINTER HAVEN, FL (WFLA) -

An All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and a bicyclist crash in Polk County leaving one dead and three in critical condition.

Deputies say around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, a witness reported that a black ATV was traveling westbound on Bomber Road and passed them going at a high rate of speed, just west of Gerber Dairy Road in Winter Haven.  The witness reported that the ATV did not have on any lights.  The witness then saw the ATV's brake lights ahead in the darkness, which appeared to swerve as if it was avoiding something.  When the witness approached the area, the ATV was lying upside down in a ditch and a mangled bicycle was nearby.

Deputies report that there were four victims lying on the ground – it is unclear which victims were on the ATV and which were on the bicycle due to the extensive injuries they suffered and their inability to communicate.

Deputies say there were no helmets observed on any victims or at the scene.  The ATV's lights were not turned on, and there were no lights on the bicycle.  Deputies say speed and impairment may be a factor.  The crash claimed one life and the others were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.  The investigation is ongoing.

The victims and their conditions are:

18-year-old Israel Bible Jr, of 108 Madera Drive in Winter Haven–deceased;

19-year-old Danny Bermea Jr, of 649 Orrin Ave SW in Winter Haven–critical condition at LRMC;

21-year-old Ginno Cano, of 205 Diamond Acres Road in Davenport–critical condition at LRMC;

21-year-old Jose Luis Cano-Mendez, of 421 Avenue B NW in Winter Haven–critical condition at LRMC.
