Auburn clinches SEC tourney birth, beats Florida

Posted: Updated:
Damek Tomscha hit a solo home run to start the fifth and Ryan Tella hit a three-run home run with two down in the sixth as Auburn claimed a 4-1 win at Florida on Sunday afternoon. With the win Auburn won its fourth SEC series of the season and moved to 31-20, 11-16 SEC. Florida dropped to 28-25, 13-14 SEC.

"Today was as big a day as we have had all year," Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said. "To respond the way we did. It was a tough one last night and we had to put that behind us. To come out here, the will to win and the passion to come out on the winning end was a testament to this team. I am really proud of this team today."

Chase Williamson (3-0) earned the win out of the Auburn bullpen, entering in the fifth for starter Justin Camp with two on and one out. Williamson needed five pitches to get a ground ball double play off the bat of Casey Turgeon and keep Auburn ahead, 1-0.

Williamson finished the day tossing 2 2/3 innings, allowing a run on two hits while striking out one.

Terrance Dedrick earned his eighth save of the season with two innings of scoreless relief. Auburn's closer, he came in in the eighth with a man on second and none out and a run already in in the inning. He would walk the bases loaded with one out but he got a strike out of Vickash Ramjit and a fielder's choice from Josh Tobias, who hit the game-tying home run on Saturday, to keep Auburn up by three. His eight saves are the most by an Auburn pitcher since Austin Hubbard finished the SEC West Championship season with 10 saves.

Tomscha's seventh home run of the season gave Auburn a 1-0 lead to start the fifth. The home run was the fifth of the weekend for Auburn and its fourth solo blast against the Florida pitching staff.

Tella's second three-run home run of the weekend gave Auburn a 4-0 lead in the sixth, driving a Danny Young pitch off the scoreboard in right with two down and Patrick Savage on first and Jordan Ebert on second.

Turgeon's eighth-inning double off of Williamson scored Richie Martin and ruined Auburn's bid for a shutout.

Camp went 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and walking one in his first career start, striking out three. His start was the second-longest for an Auburn pitcher in a SEC series finale this season behind only Will Kendall's five-inning outing at Texas A&M on April 7.

Garrett Cooper's finished with two hits, extending his hitting streak to 15 games, Auburn's longest since Casey McElroy hit in 15 straight from May 1-26, 2011.

Blake Austin finished with three hits for Auburn while Cullen Wacker added two.

Auburn finished the series scoring 15 runs, hitting six home runs. Of the 15 runs, 12 of them came with two outs in an inning.

Auburn returns home for its final four games of the regular season. It will play host to Jacksonville State at 6pm on Tuesday in the final non-conference game of the regular season and then play host to No. 11 Arkansas from Thursday-Saturday in the final SEC weekend series of the year.
