Clearwater considers aquarium referendum wording

Posted: Updated:
CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) -

The city of Clearwater is a step closer to deciding whether to lease property to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to build a new facility in downtown Clearwater.

Today in a city council workshop, members discussed the wording of a referendum that will appear on a special election ballot on November 5.

November 5, in a special election, Clearwater voters will decide whether to okay the use of city owned water front property, for a 60 year lease. The CMA board wants to build the new aquarium on the present site of the old city hall. Most of the money would come from fundraising, but members are also asking for a portion from government sources, including funds from the state.

The 160 million dollar facility would include movie theaters, classrooms, an animal hospital, a large coral reef exhibit and a dolphin tank.

The first draft wording is as follows:

Shall the Clearwater City Charter be amended by adding Section 2.01(d)(8) to allow the City to negotiate and enter into a lease with the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Inc. for the construction, operation and maintenance of an aquarium on City owned property, located west of Osceola Avenue, east of the unimproved Pierce Boulevard right-of-way, north of Pierce Streets and south of Cleveland St., for a 60 year term all as described in Ordinance 8418-143.

This is just the first draft. By law it can only contain 75 words. City council members decided to consider the wording and make suggestions in a work session in two weeks
