Bartow High School IB program among the best in the nation

Posted: Updated:
BARTOW, FL (WFLA) -

A special program at Bartow High School has earned some well deserved recognition and maybe even some bragging rights among other schools across the nation.

All the attention stems from the fact that Newsweek has ranked the International Baccalaureate School at Bartow High School second in the nation among America's Best High Schools.

Newsweek arrives at the ranking by examining the top 2,000 public high schools across the nation in preparing students for college. The schools listed among the best in the country boast graduation rates and college-bound graduation rates of 99 percent or more.

Bartow High's IB program joins this elite group of schools, with 100 percent of its 226 students graduating in four years with college acceptance letters.

During the 2011-2012 academic school year, the average number of AP or IB tests taken by each student was 4.4.

Dr. Edwin Vetter, the school's principal says "There are so many good schools and good programs available locally and nationally. We would be happy to just be acknowledged among these schools. So we're ecstatic to be number two on Newsweek's list. It's a validation for the hard work that our teachers and students put in to achieve academic success."

Polk County Superintendent of Schools Dr. John A. Stewart echoes these sentiments. He too is proud of the prestigious honor bestowed upon the International Baccalaureate School at Bartow High. Of this accomplishment he says, "It is with great pleasure I congratulate Principal Dr. Edwin Vetter, the faculty, the staff and students on being given such a prestigious honor. We applaud their hard work and dedication to excellence. We are proud to count them among the best, not only here in Polk County but also across the United States."
