Hillsborough deputy shoots and kills man

Posted: Updated:
BRANDON FL (WFLA) -

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has identified the suspect who was shot and killed by a deputy on Tuesday afternoon as 50-year-old Bobby  Earl Driggers of Seffner.

The sheriff's office says Driggers was wanted on charges of grand theft auto and fraudulent use of a credit card when he was spotted at about 1:15 p.m. Tuesday by 18-year veteran Detective Jack Thompson, 46, standing next to a jeep parked at a home on Wheeler Road in Brandon.

Detective Thompson called for backup, but was attacked by Driggers in a matter of seconds. During the struggle, both Driggers and Thompson ended up in the back seat of the Jeep. Driggers ripped Detective Thompson's holster and gun from his belt according to the HCSO.

Deputy Manuel Gonzalez, 37, arrived as the backup and found Detective Thompson fighting with Driggers.  A press release put out by the HCSO says that Gonzalez found Thompson and Driggers fighting for the gun, and Thompson yelled at Gonzalez, "Shoot him, he has my gun."

Deputy Gonzalez fired one shot at Driggers, hitting him in the upper body. Driggers was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he died a short time later.

Neither deputy was injured during the confrontation. Both will be placed on administrative leave while the HCSO and the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office investigates the shooting.

Neighbors say the home where the shooting happened is often a source of trouble. "You would hear different people yelling at nighttime. Police were called out. But never knew exactly what was going on" said Donna Pizzuto.  Another neighbor gave a similar story.  "It's been 3 o'clock in the morning, random music, I know there's been a couple of busts here and there with police" said Rebekah Tilson.

Sheriff David Gee told reporters about Driggers violent criminal history that goes back to 1993 in Kansas where he served prison time for crimes such as murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.

The HCSO also reports that he has served prison time in Florida for crimes that include armed robbery, aggravated assault with a weapon, burglary and grand theft auto.

Deputy Gonzalez is a Community Resource Deputy and is a 16-year veteran with the department.
