Pinellas school gets asthma awareness award

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

Before students at John M. Sexton Elementary can get their groove on to Beyonce songs during gym class, they stop by the Nurse's Office to test their lung capacity. It's just part of a school wide Asthma initiative. The nurse helps students with a Peak Flow Meter, a device that measures breathing.

"Asthma is not a disease but a condition that can be managed," school nurse, Donna Sternad, said. "Kids and parents need to learn how to manage their Asthma."

Sexton adopted the Asthma awareness program four years ago. After the first year, asthmatic student absences decreased by 44%. Along with the Peak Flow Meter, teachers also educate the students about the causes and signs of Asthma.

"They learn the difference between being out of breath and having Asthma problems," Sternad said.

Monday at 1 p.m. the Florida Department of Health Pinellas County will present the school with a Silver Level Asthma-Friendly School Award for working with community partners to "create a safe and healthy environment for students with asthma."

Sexton is the only school in Pinellas County to get the award and one of the only schools in the state.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
