3 students hurt in Plant City school bus crash

PLANT CITY, FL (WFLA) -

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has confirmed the driver of a pickup truck who hit a school bus in Plant City on Friday afternoon has died.

Deputies identified the man as 65-year-old James Allen Flint of Plant City. He lived just five minutes away from the crash scene.

The accident happened at E. Sam Allen Road and N. Wilder Road at about 4:00 PM. According to deputies, Flint was driving eastbound on Sam Allen Road when he ran the stop sign at the intersection at Wilder Road, hitting the bus and causing it to overturn.

"I heard a loud bang on the bus and then I woke up on the side of the bus because it was flipped," said Jazmin Minjares, a Plant City High freshman who was on the bus. "I'm pretty sure that I hit my head. I had to fly to the other side because I was sitting behind the driver."

There were three students on board. Two students, including Jazmin, had minor injuries and went to South Florida Baptist Hospital.

"The friend behind me opened the emergency door for me because I was too in shock to do anything," she said. "I'm very lucky to get out of there...and be fine."

At the crash scene, paramedics checked out minor injuries on a third student and the bus driver, 66-year-old Phyllis Meachum.

Deputies shut down Sam Allen Rd. and Wilder Rd. in all three directions for about four hours and reopened it at about 8 p.m. Friday night.

Investigators aren't sure why Flint ran the stop sign. They're waiting for autopsy results.
