Bartender attacked at Indian Rocks Beach pub

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

A bartender at a pub in Indian Rocks Beach got stabbed on Sunday evening after refusing to serve a customer who was already intoxicated, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office deputies told us.

When James  Klingbeil, 50, came to the Red Lion Pub on Sunday evening, he was already intoxicated, Rebecca Shaeffer, 32, told Pinellas deputies. She didn't pour him a drink and he left.

Klingbeil came back later with a filler knife he had just bought, PCSO deputies told us. He attacked the bartender trying to stab her. The bar patrons Nicholaus Rees, 35, Michael Arnold, 26, and Gordon Rees, 44, interfered trying to help her. Together they managed to wrestle him to the ground and grab his knife. They held him down till deputies arrived, according to the PCSO report.

Paramedics took Schaeffer by air to Bayfront Medical Center. Doctors listed her injuries as non-life threatening. The men who helped her went to local hospitals and received treatments for cuts and other injuries.

Deputies arrested Klingbeil for attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery and battery. He is at the Pinellas County Jail.
