Rescue efforts continue in Oklahoma City suburbs after devastating monster tornado

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

President Obama declared a major disaster in Oklahoma, and instructed his disaster response team to get tornado victims everything they need "right away." Officials now say at least 24 people were killed when a massive twister plowed through the town of Moore.

Rescuers are searching for survivors who may be buried under piles of wood, metal, concrete and glass in the tornado-ravaged town of Moore, Oklahoma.

Several schools and a hospital were damaged or destroyed along with dozens of homes, and businesses.

Hundreds of people were rescued throughout the night.

Soldiers closed off the area surrounding Plaza Towers Elementary school. It took a direct hit, and at least 7 children were killed.

Residents are carrying out whatever belongings they can from the destruction zone. The area includes Briarwood Elementary school which was badly damaged.

National Guard Airmen used thermal imaging technology searching house-to-house for survivors.

The tornado was packing 200 mile per hour winds when it carved a path of destruction more than a mile wide and 11 miles long.

Churches and community centers were turned into shelters for families who lost their homes.

Tornados are possible in Oklahoma today, but the town of Moore is not in the risk area.
