News 3 Special Report: "Does it work?"

Posted: Updated:

The GripGo, Wipe New and the Pocket Hose claim to save you time and money, but do they work?

James Root is the Auto Tech Lead at Best Buy. We compared the GripGo to the Dynex Bicycle and Car Mount.

Both are similar, but Root says the Dynex had more support.

The GripGo sells for $10.99 at Walgreens. The Dynex is sold at Best Buy for $20.99.

Root says both products work well.

"Whichever one was available to me is what I would get, they are both comparable," says Root.

Next up, the Wipe New. TV ads claim it's "the world's longest lasting solution for restoring and protecting your vehicle"

We got mixed results.

"It's not just putting a film over the top of the plastic, it's actually absorbing into the plastic…I would use it for all hard plastics, just to restore the plastic and the look, make it look new again," says Brandon Judge, the Service Advisor for Carl Gregory Chrysler Jeep Dodge on Victory Drive in Columbus.

But Richard Davis, owner of 4th Avenue Car Wash, isn't convinced.

"I put the Wipe New across the top of the truck. From a distance it looks great, but when you're in certain lights of the sun, you can see wave patterns already starting to come back," says Davis.

Keep in mind, Davis washes his truck everyday of the week. Both of our experts agreed- it did what it claimed.

Finally, Consumer Reports tested three As-Seen-On-TV expandable garden hoses. The DAP XHose, the FlexAbleHose and the Pocket Hose.

"Their length increased by three times as claimed. And their flow was good, just like a regular hose," says Bernie Deitrick with Consumer Reports.

Brenda Starke at John's Lawn & Garden Center in Phenix City agreed but would only recommend it for light gardening use.

"It's not going as far if you put that pressure on a regular hose…so you'll have to do more walking to get the watering done," she says.

Consumer Reports twisted and knotted the hoses.

"No matter what we did, the water kept flowing," says Deitrick. And all three shrank back to their original size as promised.
