Immigration prayer vigil held in Johnson city

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

A prayer vigil was held Monday evening in Johnson City to raise awareness for immigration reform in the United States.

The bi-lingual event was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Johnson City.

The vigil was organized by Alma Vazquez who recently became a U.S. citizen even though she had been in the United States since 1989.

Vazquez said there is often a 20 year backlog for people seeking to become U.S. citizens.

Immigration is currently a hot topic of debate for lawmakers and Vazquez is hopeful those who make policy will step forward and help fix a broken system.

"They know it's the just thing to do. It is just to reform it. I think they are concerned about their work. That they might lose it if they support us," said Vazquez.
