Triangle students conduct tornado drill

Posted: Updated:

Parents, teachers and principals watched in horror as an elementary school in Oklahoma was destroyed, trapping students inside.

It has led many to ask, how safe are Triangle students?

Wake County Schools allowed WNCN News inside Brassfield Elementary in Raleigh Tuesday, as they conducted a tornado drill.

We watched as students and their teachers quickly evacuated the classrooms, after the principal made an emergency announcement to do so.

Then, they got into position, heads down, against the walls of the main interior hallways.

They stayed like that until the principal gave the all clear over the intercom.

Principal Elizabeth Macwilliams says schools like Brassfield do this drill annually. And the events in Oklahoma hit home.

"That's always running through our mind. How are we going to protect our students--how are we going to communicate the threat and maintain our composure---and model what we expect from our students," she says.

The principal said teachers are trained on how to deal with these types of emergencies just as often as they are taught how to teach.
