RALEIGH, N.C. -

Atlantic Avenue in Raleigh is back open following a fatal accident involving a school bus Wednesday morning.

Officials said the bus driver, Octavius Smith, was driving the bus to pick up students who attend West Millbrook Middle School. There were no children on the bus at the time of the accident.

Smith was traveling southbound on Atlantic Avenue when 26-year-old Lana Awani Almishini pulled into the path of the bus.

The bus was traveling at 45 miles per hour at impact, pushing Almishini's vehicle 85 feet.

Almishini, of Raleigh, died from injuries sustained in the accident.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of Atlantic Avenue between Atlantic Springs and Spring Forest roads were closed off to traffic for about four hours Wednesday morning. The lanes were back opening shortly before 10:30 a.m.

Smith has been a bus driver with the Wake County school system since October.

Officials have not said if any charges will be filed in the incident.
