Suspect who snatched Polk deputy's purse arrested

TEMPLE TERRACE, FL (WFLA) -

Multiple law enforcement agencies participated in arrest of the man Tuesday afternoon in Temple terrace who they said robbed an off-duty Polk County Sheriff's deputy a few days ago.

Tampa Police officers along with the US Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force agents arrested Damarius Antwun Matthews, who was considered armed and dangerous, at apartment at 8713 North 48th St.

Winter Haven police officers said, Matthews, 22, snatched Deputy Regina Hulverson's purse which contained her badge and a gun at the Publix on Cypress Gardens Boulevard in Winter Haven Sunday.

Matthews left in a 2013 silver Mazda. Police found the car Monday and impounded it. It was a rental.

The warrant for Matthwes' arrests lists robbery, grand theft of firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and petit theft as the charges. He is at Polk COunty jail.

Officials said they haven't found the badge and the gun. They request anyone with information about the firearm or the credentials to contact the Winter Haven Police Department at (863) 287-8214 or Heartland Crime Stoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS (8477). 

Callers can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward.
